Decemberists LOVE [24 Oct 2005|03:54pm]

Hi Guys.
Ok I am going to make you all jealous...
I saw and met the Decemberists last year in Cleveland, OH USA while my boyfriend and I were over there on holidays.
They were AWESOME! The gig was brilliant (although they didn't play The Tain which I would've loved) and they
are seriously the nicest people ever. Jenny and Rachel (who has now left) were just gorgeous. They were so nice.
Let us hang out backstage with them for a bit after the gig. Had photo's with us and even did a sweeper for the community
radio station my bf works at here.
We asked them when they're going to come to oz and they said it is a long way to come but hopefully they would come soon.
It'll be worth the wait! I just hope they make it over to Perth!! If not a trip east won't be so bad.
I'll find our photos we had with them and post them soon.

Ok, as with my promise to upload some of the stuff people may or may not have, I'm going to place my favourite song of the moment up on www.yousendit.com

Everything I Try To Do, Nothing Seems To Turn Out Right

It's Colin at his most beautiful and (seemingly) vulnerable, and I guess that's why I like it.
It has a pretty melody and nice synth sound underneath colins mellifluous voice at the start, but quickly builds when it reaches the chorus.
No prostitutes or vengeful mariners in this song - it reaches back to the core of what you feel sometimes when stuff isn't as deep as you want it to be or even when you give somebody all of your being they won't give that much back. That's sort of what I read into it apart from the obvious sex and rain...yeah. Just listen to it and read the lyrics. Tell me your thoughts!

The obligitory introduction and the inevitable lack of comment...

Name: Danielle / syds_emily
City: Melbourne, Australia (obviously)
Favourite Bands (other than the Decemberists): Pink Floyd, The Smiths, Belle and Sebastian, David Bowie, The Cure, Echo and the Bunnymen, The Beatles, Peter Gabriel, Elliott Smith, Yes, Madness, The Shins...yes a strange variety there.
First Decemberists Song: California One/Youth And Beauty Brigade - I was sewing a pink bunny onto a skirt of mine when my sister walked in with portable speakers and a copy of California One...10 minutes of wholesome bliss.
Decemberists song you most associate with yourself:  Here I Dreamt I Was An Architect (hell, we all read some strange things into songs at times, and I think what I've seen in the lyrics are just so different from their intended meaning)
Decemberists song you dance to: Legionnaire's Lament
Decemberists song you would cry to: We Both Go Down Together
Decemberists song you crave to hear: July, July!
Favourite Decemberists Songs: haha I tried to list them all but I couldn't make up my mind...so if I pick one from each album - Picaresque: Engine Driver, Castaways and Cutouts: Here I Dreamt I Was An Architect, Her Majesty: Los Angeles, I'm Yours.
Least Favourite songs: From My Own True Love, The Gymnast High Above The Ground, Shanty For The Arethusa, My Mother Was A Chinese Trapese Artist.
Favourite Part Of Their Music: Colin's wonderful voice and equally *interesting* accent
Favourite way to listen: Either on the bus while it's raining outside or drinking a huge cup of tea sitting on my bed with my head positioned right in the middle of the speakers (while it's raining...the best weather for practically everything but sunbaking)

More like your amazing, beautiful, talented little sister managed to grab Picaresque off the shelves!

*ahem* now that that's cleared up.

YES! The Decemberists are wonderful, aren't they? Can't believe I totally forgot how cute As I Rise is, and therefore didn't listen to it! You're now on the phone, I can hear you :O

I'm gonna go now before I embarass myself (or you) further.

"The First Post" haha... [19 Oct 2005|05:14pm]

Hello to anybody who has accidently found this community! I thought that what I'd do is set up a community along the lines of some other Australian sites, but specifically with the purpose of bringing together some Australian fans of The Decemberists and also exposing some other people to their music as well in the process.

I'll admit that I haven't been a fan very long, but I'm dedicated and I adore music, and I think what picaresque Colin Meloy and his band of vagabondes are doing is exceptional. Sadly, I do have my year 12 exams starting in 8 days, so things might not start up here for a while. But I've thought of the idea, so why not give it a shot?

Hopefully when we have a few members and so forth I can send out songs via yousendit.com or directly to people who either don't have all of their songs or those who have none! I'd also really appreciate any rare stuff people might have snagged off American counterparts.

The reason this is set up for Australian fans is that not only is our country far away from the Decemberists (and therefore less likely to play host to a tour) but ordering their music in is sometimes very difficult. I managed to get Picaresque straight off the shelves here in Melbourne, but getting Castaways and Her Majesty was a little harder. I'm still waiting on Five Songs, The Tain and Billy Liar (the single cd) but through a good friend I managed to get those albums downloaded plus a few live recordings and a concert.

I was trying to keep this first entry short and simple!
More to come from me soon, but until then you're welcome to join or check out my LJ (I don't update too often because I keep most of my private stuff for my diary, but if I'm going to be posting about music you might find I'm a lot more open than I would be just talking about my real life). A picture of Colin MeloyCollapse )
